GA Blog Post – Fern’s Wellbeing and Running Story

Hi,

Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Fernando Pires, but many of you probably simply know me as Fern. I just recently graduated SHU and I am now pursuing my master’s in accounting. After my time here I will be starting a job at KPMG.

That sums up my professional life on a basic level. But just like most Sacred Heart students, I’m juggling working full time, going to school, keeping up with my personal life and a million other things. Life is stressful and when you throw school and a college atmosphere on top of it, it adds a whole new dimension to it; it’s hard.

One thing I have learned is that having outlets to be able to clear your mind of the difficulties life throws at you goes a long way. For me, my outlet became running. It was a way to get off campus, get away from the studying, drama and stressors of college. It was something that cleared my mind. In the long run (pun intended), it actually turned me into a more focused, driven, and organized student. Being able to leave a situation and come back to it with a clear refreshed mind set priority to all the tasks I needed to accomplish.

Now you might be starting to think that I’m trying to preach running on to you, but that’s not what I’m trying to do here. The importance of this post isn’t to turn you all into runner. I know many people see running as torture (and some days, I would agree)! The point I want to get across is that everyone should have that one thing that removes them from all the stressors of life. This can be in the form of several things like: playing an instrument, lifting weights, doing yoga, reading a book, playing cards, going on a walk, journaling and the list goes on. This could be anything that you would like it to be. This post is me urging not only every student, but every person to find something that makes them feel like a better you.

Below are a few cool articles about the benefits of running specifically!

Thanks for reading into my new series here. Keep a look out for next month’s blog post.

Best,

Fern.
