Coming from a recent alumni, your time here at Sacred Heart University really does fly by. While you may believe you have all the time in the world to worry about your post-graduation plans, it truly comes faster than you think. You should always have a plan for the future, and there is no better place to help you than the Center for Career & Professional Development.
The Career Center is something we first learned about on our tours and is always available to students throughout our four years. It’s never too early to take advantage of the career center, whether you want to stop by for a resume review, take a new headshot picture, or set up an appointment with your career coach to discuss your future.
I first came to the Career Center as a sophomore to have my resume reviewed, and it was such a valuable experience. I received a resume packet that guided how I created my resume and received insightful tips on how I can improve the quality of my writing. I later learned about an available Work Study position and was lucky enough to begin the following year.
For my last two years, I had the pleasure of working at the Center for Career & Professional Development, providing a welcoming environment for faculty and students passing by. I helped many students build and improve their resumes and grew so much as an individual. The Career Center provides so many opportunities for students of all majors and classes to participate in, whether it is a Career Fair with hiring employers, or any of our office events where career coaches provide advice.
My biggest piece of advice is to take advantage of these opportunities. Take a look at how each Handshake email comes through, as these opportunities are designed for you. Get to know your career coaches and create meaningful relationships with them throughout your time at Sacred Heart. They are here to help your professional development and ease your post-graduation worries. It felt like yesterday I was a freshman. You never know when a professional opportunity will come your way, so it is always best to be prepared with a resume you are confident in and proud of. The future depends on what you do today!
