SEATTLE REP is accepting applications for our Professional Arts Training Program (PATP). For more than 35 years, the PATP has helped young professionals break into the world of not-for-profit arts. Applications will be accepted through September 23, 2021 at 4PM PST.

ABOUT THE PATP
Seattle Rep’s Professional Arts Training Program provides apprentices the opportunity to learn alongside professional art and theater-makers. PATP offers hands-on work learning and behind scenes experience. Apprentices undertake responsibilities as members of various departments, contribute ideas, participate in department and staff meetings, and engage in projects with the guidance of their supervisor. They will also participate in professional workshops and seminars, which provide connections with theater staff, guest artists, and the Seattle Arts community members.
Seattle Rep’s 2021/22 Season runs December 2021 – June 2022. Apprenticeship contract start/end dates will vary by department.
- Stage Management, Directing/Casting, Directing/Literary, Production Management, Lighting Design: Full-time (40 hours per week) for up to 20 weeks, with some sabbatical time. Weekly hours will vary based on the needs of each production but a minimum of 32 hours per week can be expected. In addition, a limited amount of overtime will be available during tech weeks.
- Development: Full-time (40 hours per week) for up to 20 weeks, with some sabbatical time.
- Youth Engagement: Part-time for up to 44 weeks.
- Compensation: All Apprenticeships pay $17/hour

- In addition to hands-on training in their chosen field, Apprentices have the opportunity to participate in:
- Cohort activities to build relationships within the Apprentice class.
- Seminars with industry professionals to gain an overview of how departments collaborate at the regional theater level. These seminars also introduce Apprentices to the Seattle theater scene and help them gain an understanding of how different-sized organizations work.
DIRECTING/LITERARY APPRENTICE POSITION OVERVIEW
The Directing/Literary Apprenticeship provides an opportunity to assist leading directors in the field and be part of the day-to-day life of a regional theater artistic staff. Time is split between the rehearsal room and administrative experiences, making it a unique and holistic opportunity for young directors interested in artistic administration as well. As an assistant director, the Directing/Literary Apprentice works on 2-3 shows, with duties that can range from taking notes, script supervision, research, observation, and more. As a member of the artistic team, the Apprentice participates in season planning, script reading, industry research, and artistic administrative work. Additionally, assists the producing team and artists in the room for The Other Season, Seattle Rep’s new-play development lab. The Apprentice is supervised by Artistic Associate & Assistant to the Artistic Director Hattie Claire Andres, a proud former Directing/Casting Intern.
During this apprenticeship, participants will:
- Learn about the art of directing through assisting, discussions, and optional guided projects
- Be exposed to and build relationships with some of the top directors in the country
- Gain valuable credits as an Assistant Director in a professional regional theater
- Participate in the ongoing literary duties of an artistic department (reading, researching, and organizing scripts)
- Participate in season planning and understand how an artistic staff operates
- Participate in the development processes of new work
- Have a working knowledge of AEA (Actors’ Equity Association), IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees), and LORT (League of Resident Theatres) guidelines
- Build a network of theatrical professionals locally and nationally
- Interest in directing and experience as an assistant director (directing experience is preferred, but not required)
- Demonstrated interest in literary, dramaturgical and/or new work development
- Excellent writing and analysis skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and a good sense of humor
