I talk to college students almost daily that love planning entertainment on their campus so much that they want to make a career out of it. Many of them ask me for advice on how to get a job, what skills to work on, and what experiences to list on their resume. This is my best advice for the next generation of entertainment professionals:
1. WORK ON YOUR WRITING SKILLS
In today’s world, we are constantly communicating via email. You need to be able to write effectively, communicate well, and use correct grammar. I cannot emphasize this enough. Attention spans are also short, so practice being succinct. I also find myself naturally more interested in people whose passion and enthusiasm comes through in their writing.
2. SHOW PERSONALITY & PROFESSIONALISM
Yes, I look for both simultaneously. Be conversational and personable. Be ready to talk to anyone. Networking is key in this business. At the same time, be professional and composed. When you meet someone that works in the entertainment industry, ask a lot of questions and be genuinely interested in receiving professional advice. Organic conversations can lead to important connections.
3. KEEP CALM
People that are nervous all the time make others nervous. Don’t over-react when something goes wrong. Stay calm. Things are going to go wrong occasionally, but you have to say to yourself “Okay, that happened. Now how can we fix it?” Most issues can be solved with a little creative thinking and a good attitude.
4. BE CONFIDENT
It’s important to be humble and kind, but also confident. Be sure of yourself and highlight your strengths. Don’t ever say “I was just a member of my programming board.” Just?! I would rather hear about all the things you did as a member than the word “just.”
5. GATHER VARIED EXPERIENCES
One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to say “yes” to learning opportunities. If you are asked to do something remotely related to the profession you are interested in, don’t pass up the opportunity. Maybe this opportunity isn’t the ideal position you are looking for, but it could lead to something better. Connections you make along the way could make it all worth it. And, a well-rounded mix of experiences is better than having all your expertise in one area.
