By Tessa Carminucci & Angelina Lanni, Graduate Assistants
We’re both graduate assistants at Sacred Heart University’s Center for Career & Professional Development, currently pursuing our Master’s Degree in Business Administration. We know firsthand how stressful the job search can feel, so we’re sharing how we’ve stayed organized, motivated, and proactive throughout the process.
Searching for a job after college can feel overwhelming but breaking it down into steps can make the process much more manageable. Typically, the job search begins by reflecting on your interests, skills, and career goals and researching industries and companies that align with them. Students start by building a strong resume and LinkedIn profile, attending networking events, and applying for internships or entry-level positions. It’s also important to stay organized by keeping track of applications, tailoring materials like cover letters to each position, and preparing for interviews. Throughout the process, persistence and flexibility are key — getting an offer after just one or two applications is rare, so following up and building your network is very important.
Tessa: Balancing Job Applications & Being a Student-Athlete
As a student-athlete and full-time grad student, staying organized has made a huge difference. I created a job search spreadsheet that tracks every role I apply to—company, position, deadline, application status, and notes. I also block off specific time during the week for applications to keep from getting overwhelmed. Breaking tasks down (resume updates, cover letters, networking) into separate days makes it feel more manageable. Staying consistent with small steps has helped me stay on track without burning out!
Angelina: Targeted Research & Application Strategy
I’ve been focused on applying to entry-level roles in marketing and management through Handshake and LinkedIn. I regularly review job descriptions to understand what employers are looking for, then tailor my materials to highlight relevant skills. I make it a point to follow up on applications and check in with connections. Setting small goals and being open to different industries has kept me motivated and allowed me to discover roles I hadn’t considered before.
